Thank you!

It has been a long, tough campaign, but to feel the vindication of so many votes, from across the 1st Ward, just makes me feel so grateful and humbled, it’s difficult to put into words.

We ran a positive campaign that highlighted our accomplishments and addressed the important issues facing the 1st Ward. As we go forward, I know that having your strong support will be of great comfort to me and will motivate me to continue to serve as an independent voice on the city council.

In the very near future, we will begin the process of public hearings on the upcoming NJ Transit redevelopment plan, which will have a major impact on our ward.

We will also be finalizing our municipal budget, which I hope will return a portion of the budget surplus to taxpayers. I know my city council colleagues want to see the same thing, so I look forward to working with them on this final leg of the process.

As we move forward I want to make sure that the progress we have fought so hard to bring to our great city continues. I am proud to have served as a member of the city council and appreciate your vote of confidence.

No tow yard in the 1st Ward!

I just want to let you know that a resolution I sponsored was unanimously passed at this week’s City Council meeting that will go a long way towards protecting your quality of life. The resolution stops City Hall from turning the Municipal Garage site on Observer Highway, between Willow and Park avenues, into a tow yard or impound lot. This is a great victory for the residents of the 1st Ward as a 24-hour tow yard would have brought unwanted noise and traffic to our neighborhood and would have had a terrible impact on your quality of life.

As the sponsor of this resolution, my main concern was keeping the proposed tow yard out of our residential neighborhood, and I thank my council colleagues for their unanimous support.

I would also like to thank residents of the 1st Ward, who expressed concern over the possibility of a tow yard being moved to their neighborhood.

I just want you to know that, as your councilwoman, I will continue to passionately guard your quality of life, one of the most important issues in this election.

Letters to the editor endorsing Theresa

To the Editor:

Terry Castellano is the only choice for First Ward Council Person. For many years she has served the people of Hoboken and especially the residents of the First Ward. She has never been too busy to answer a question or seek a reliable source of information. Her wish to help extends beyond the bounds of her personal political views. She continues to fight to maintain the character of the city, speaking out against NJ Transit’s plan to build a wall of skyscrapers over the railroad tracks at the southern edge of Hoboken.

Eric Kurta, her opponent, has also been active for many years. He worked at developing a reputation as long time leader of People for Open Government. He supported the primary goal of POG, namely, transparency in government. To my disbelief, his conviction in the importance of openness in government disappeared when he was recently appointed to the hospital board. Shortly after the council meeting at which I recommended strongly that the council protect its citizens by asking the HMA to open its meetings to the public and depart from its policy of secrecy, Eric paid me a personal visit for the sole purpose of asking me to refrain from requesting transparency. The excuses that he offered, lame at best, proved the emptiness of his commitment to transparency and open government. As a colleague I reluctantly agreed to abstain from pressing for answers.

His request represented the antithesis of much that POG worked for.

Withholding information, limiting the public’s access to that information, and stifling the investigation of issues, are classic ways for politicians to deceive their constituents. Such actions are inherently dangerous and cannot be tolerated.

Hoboken deserves honest leaders who respect the rights of its citizens to know, enabling them to make intelligent, well informed decision. Terry has integrity and has proven her commitment to the residents of Hoboken.

Letters to the editor endorsing Theresa

To all the voters in Hoboken.
Here are some things to think about when you go to the polls to cast your vote for City Council members:

Dawn Zimmer had bicycle lanes painted on Madson and Grand Streets. Unfortunately, they were painted on the wrong side. Bicyclists are supposed to ride to the right of the driver, with traffic. How much money and how many man hours were spent on this fiasco??

Dawn Zimmer and her Parking Authority Director Ian Sacs put the “corner car” plan into effect but at what costs to the residents of Hoboken? Aside from taking away parking spaces from residents, the company that has the corner cars (Hertz) is not subject to parking tickets. They are not required to move their cars for snow removal, street cleaning etc. They are supposed to clean the spaces themselves. Wouldn’t it be nice, if the residents of Hoboken, were able to sweep their own spaces and not worrying about moving their cars. Do you know that a corner car can park in any space but residents are not allowed to park in the corner car spaces!!! Hertz pays $100 per space. Why can’t residents pay $100 per month if they choose and have a permanent space??

It also cost the city of Hoboken over $3,000 for postage to advertise the concept of the corner cars. Put the cars in public lots. Leave our spaces alone. When asked to justify the taking of 50 more spaces for this plan, Ian Sach’s answer was that the general public was lazy and stupid and didn’t know what’s good for them! I know what’s good for me. Vote against Dawn Zimmer candidates in all the wards.

Snow removal is the biggest joke of all. 18 men were laid off, the garage for the snow equipment was moved 3 times, resulting in major lawsuits against the city. The snow equipment was gotten rid of – possibly given to other municipalities. Two large mounds of salt were given to Weehawken. AND THEN IT SNOWED!! Hoboken had to hire outside firms to remove the snow at the cost of over $500,000, and they never cleaned the corners or cleaned the storm drains. As a result, when the snow started to melt, it had no place to go, so it just refroze and made crossing the street even more difficult. It takes brains and common sense to run a city and it seems Zimmer and Co. lack both.

Let’s all go and vote in a Council that won’t automatically rubber stamp proposals and resolutions the mayor wants. We need a council that will question the feasibility, the needs, the impact and the cost effectiveness of all proposals and resolutions. Then make decisions that will benefit Hoboken. The only way to have a council like this, is to vote for a candidate THAT IS NOT BACKED BY DAWN ZIMMER!!

As far as the First Ward is concerned, candidate Eric Kurta has referred to Affordable Housing as a drain on Hoboken’s economy. That is to say Marineview. Marineview pays taxes to Hoboken, so that is an untrue statement. The present administration is a drain with all its machinations. In fact, Mr Kurta doesn’t work, therefore doesn’t pay taxes. He is a drain on the economy. I was told it was because he was writing a thesis (for about 8 yrs) on Hoboken. No comment!!! First Warders get out there and vote for Terry Castellano, she will fight for the residents not for Dawn Zimmer. VOTE 1 A

On the issues

I would have preferred a one-on-one debate against my opponent, but any chance I get to be at the same table with him to discuss our differences on the issues, I’m going to take it. Unlike my opponent, who sees the 1st ward as fodder for a Grad School thesis, I deal with the realities of 1st ward constituent issues every day. I think you’ll see the difference.
